Preparing for the IAS exams

The first stage of the IAS (Indian Administrative Services) exams is the Civil Services Preliminary Exam. This exam is a screening test. The candidates that successfully clear the prelim exam are eligible to sit the IAS Main Exams.


Details of Prelim exams


This prelim exam has two papers:
1.    Paper I – General Studies
2.    Paper II – Civil Services Aptitude Test


Both these papers carry 200 marks each and their duration is 2 hours each.

There are some eligibility criteria that all candidates must clear before they can take these exams, such as nationality, age, education, number of attempts, etc.
The IAS Mains is the second stage of these exams. These have 9 papers in total. Once the candidate successfully clears all nine, they are called for the third round that consists of a personality test or interview round. This last round is conducted at the UPSC Bhawan in New Delhi.
